The Clarens Golf and Trout
Estate, South Africa

Take a walk on the tranquil side of life by coming home to The Clarens Golf and Trout Estate. Nestled in the foothills of the Maluti Mountains on the edge of the dramatic Golden Gate nature reserve in the Eastern Free State, Clarens is fast becoming the perfect place to escape to for peace, tranquility and breath-taking beauty.

The Clarens Golf and Trout Estate is nestled in a valley with spectacular scenery and is just is 2½ hours by car from Johannesburg. Scenic roads lead to the coastal city of Durban within 3 hours. The estate features a championship 18-hole golf course and trout-fishing waters. The area is rich with fossils, and the surrounding sandstone mountains that are often dusted with snow, are multi-coloured geological wonders. Autumn colours take one’s breath away with the mature end of season beauty drifting through the Lombard poplar trees and the sight of the soft blue heavens resting on the brown and then again green hilltops.

The Clarens Golf and Trout Estate provides international and local visitors with the unique combination of playing golf in a mesmerizing part of South Africa and in doing trout fishing in a trout fisherman's haven.

One can say with confidence that the unique experience of golfing and trout fishing at The Clarence will in time become part of a favoured South African golf trip planning schedule in combination with coastal golf courses like Pinnacle Point in Mossel Bay.

The Clarence Golf and Trout Estate offers golf players and trout fishermen alike an investment opportunity to suit various requirements. The investment options include 20 lodges, 23 villas and 209 residential erven/plots. A chosen plot can become the base to put up an architect designed dwelling that will fit the owner’s need to have a home in harmony with this area’s unique ambience. Planned to overlook the magnificent 18-hole golf course that features streams, dams and waterfalls and stocked with gliding rainbow trout, it will become a longed for and sought after haven for family, friends and for rental to qualified tenants.

Ownership at The Clarens Golf and Trout Estate includes golf club membership as well as a 5 year membership in the local conservancy and Trout Club.

Other Attractions

Clarens and its surrounds offers the owner at Clarens Golf and Trout Estate a variety of other attractions: flyfishing, nature trails, birding, horse riding, 4x4 trails, mountain biking, hiking and walking trails, dinosaur explorer trails, rock art, game parks, battlefield tours, golf, tennis, squash, bowls, bow hunting, game and wing shooting, clay pigeon shooting, whitewater rafting and kayaking, arts and crafts. The Bushmen paintings, Fertility Caves, Surrender Hill, The Titanic Rock, Basutho Cultural Village, and the Golden Gate National Park should not be missed.

Apart from the little round white ball, the trout fishing gear, one will also be mesmerized with the Bearded Vulture, Bold Ibis and the Black Wildebeest that all add to the allure of the Clarens area.

Artists flock to Clarens and there are at least 18 art galeries when last counted! Quaint restaurants, bars and coffee shops provide the social structure for locals and visitors to frequent with great joy.

Where is The Clarence Golf and Trout Estate?

The Clarens Valley in the Eastern Free State Highlands is situated 20km from the Golden Gate National Park, 40km from Bethlehem, and on the Northernmost point of Lesotho. One can easily facilitate the airport at Bloemfontein for a springboard to and from other golf courses in South Africa.

Clarens is known for its spectacular sandstone mountains. The Rooiberge is the range encompassing the village, while the mighty Maluti’s stand proud in shades of purple and blue further to the southeast.

The Clarens Golf & Trout Estate offers you a chance to enjoy all of this, while allowing you the privilege of owning your own lodge in what we believe will one day be known as the 'True Jewel of the Free State'.

The Clarens Golf Course

Your round of golf at The Clarens Trout & Golf Estate begins at the stylish clubhouse, strategically positioned to view the finish of both nines, as well as the magnificent Mount Horeb (Setlofe).

According to Basotho legend, the mountain Setlofe is a shy maiden. She was betrothed to the warrior, Matsa (Rhebokkop) who jilted her for another. This broke Setlofe's heart and even now, when she thinks about it, she draws her veil around her head and weeps. Thus when Setlofe is shrouded in cloud, it will soon rain in Clarens.

Before you tee off, take time to absorb the setting of the picturesque town and the full 360 degree view of the mountains. All of the holes meander along and across the tranquil river and its splendid series of trout dams, waterfalls and cascades.

The playing surface of the manicured Kikuyu fairways and Bent Grass Greens are framed by mature Willow and magnificent Lombardi poplar trees, characteristic of the area. This layout is a classic "risk and reward" design. With the fairways wide at the landing areas off the tees, one can easily reach the large greens in regulation to your handicap. However, nearly every green hugs the water, so it’s a case of play safe to your handicap, or attack the flags to "go low".

A remarkable feature is the large dam below the clubhouse, which hosts five greens around it, to compliment the view from the veranda of the superb sunset through the valley. Great care has been taken to ensure that each round of golf that you play will be as memorable, if not more memorable than the previous one, through attention to detail and beauty.

The par 72 golf course, designed and constructed by Golf Data, is bound to excite every level of golfer. All 18 holes meander along and across the tranquil river and its splendid series of trout dams and cascading waterfalls.

The Clarens Trout Fishing Experience

Trout fishing in the Free State Province is centred principally on the beautiful town of Clarens, nestled in the foothills of the majestic Maluti Mountains. Most of the fishing is in stillwater, but the Little Caledon River is accessible in places to stream fishers.

Ownership of a lodge in The Clarens Golf and Trout Estate entitles you and your family to 5-year membership to the local conservancy, which affords you access to various trout rich streams and rivers in close proximity to Clarens.

Winters in the Eastern Free State regularly produce night time temperatures well below freezing point, causing reasonably heavy snowfalls. Daytime in the Winter sees temperatures rising into the teens with beautiful clear skies. Many small streams, cascades, fountains and waterfalls freeze during winter and besides releasing notable quantities of clear sparkling water during spring thaws, the ice expanses add greatly to the magnificent winter mountain scenery. This is trout fishing country at its absolute best! A local conservancy will provide direction and management of the estate's trout dams.

The Clarens Golf and Trout Estate development team is bringing all of this right into your back garden by introducing Stillwater dams and cascading streams throughout the golf estate. Due to the comparatively low angling pressure on our estate streams, and the encouragement to 'catch and release', the average size of our fish will be on a par with some of the highly rated rivers and dams in Great Britain and North America.

An attribute that all top anglers possess is their familiarity with the feeding habits of their quarry. It makes sense, therefore, that you acquaint yourself with a few of the organisms that trout feed on, even if it is done on a fairly superficial level.

Some of the names you will become familiar with are: Walker’s Killer, Griffith’s Gnat, Rat-faced Mc Dougal, Mrs. Simpson, Kaufman’s Lake Dragon, Gold-ribbed Hare’s Ear, Bead-head Woolly Bugger and Damsel Nymph to name but a few.
